My book-in-progress, ELSEWHERE RESOUNDING: EXOTIC LANDS AND PEOPLES IN WESTERN MUSIC, addresses one major aspect--the musical side--of the large and fascinating, sometimes troubling problem of “how to represent other cultures.” ELSEWHERE RESOUNDING defines the nature and limits of musical exoticism, combs and synthesizes various theoretical approaches to it, traces its development over a number of centuries in different Western countries, and, finally, looks at two rather vast “regions” (or, at times, _imagined_ regions) that have been particularly important for Western musical creativity: “the East” (treated as a sometimes relatively undifferentiated space extending from Morocco to Japan) and "Spain and Latin America."
