An Ethnohistory of an Early Texas Place from the Caddos to the Texians

More than Six Flags" is a study of the "borderlands" of east Texas, from the 1400s to the 1840s. The project focuses on Nacogdoches, Texas, which was a crossroads for many early Americans. During this period French, Spanish, Mexicans, Texans, and Americans planted national flags over Nacogdoches. But the Caddos, Apaches, Spanish, French, Africans, and many others who lived there, created and negotiated multiethnic spaces as they engaged in some of the earliest experiments in globalization. My goal is to examine French, Spanish and English primary sources as well as oral histories and archaeological remains to recover and further complicate historical understandings of contact between western and non-western cultures in early America.
