This study will be the first book length analysis of James Madison's revolutionary defense of an extended republic. It will address debates over the historical significance and best interpretation of Madison's theory. It will also assess the numerous empirical and theoretical criticisms that have been lodged against Madison's theory and evaluate commentary about the enduring effects of the adoption of an extended republic in America. My goals are to place Madison’s theory in the context of a broad historical conversation about the proper relationship of size and republicanism in early America, provide a developmental analysis of Madison's evolving understanding of his theory, and offer a balanced and novel interpretation of it.
