A Political Biography of Delarivier Manley

FAIN: FB-53454-07

Rachel Karen Carnell
Cleveland State University (Cleveland, OH 44115-2214)

The works of the Tory satirist Delarivier Manley (c. 1670-1724) helped bring down the Whig government in 1710 and influenced the development of subsequent British satire and the British novel. No biography of Manley has ever been published. This political biography, which will be published in 2008 by Pickering & Chatto, will present, for the first time, details of all aspects of her life and work. It will also analyze her development as a writer through her engagement with the political and literary voices of her day. This project will fill a significant gap in Manley scholarship and will also offer an important historical perspective on women’s efforts today to be taken seriously in the political public sphere.
