Four-week faculty development institute in black literature designed to provide opportunity for members of English faculty of predominantly Negro South Carolina State College to study black literature intensively, and the ways in which that literature reflects the American experience. General aim to develop a sound program in black literature as a part of the English curriculum. Six outside experts to present lectures on such subjects as black literature, aspects of folk cultural tradition, the mystique of the black aesthetics, assessment of literary qualities of recent Negro writers, early American Negro poets. Experts also to participate in discussions. Institute allows concentrated study for faculty members who have had no formal courses in black literature. During 1970-71 academic year, each faculty participant will be responsible for submitting a teaching unit to curriculum committee on some black literary work which he will first teach to test its effectiveness. Funds for consultants' travel and fees, stipends for participants, administration, curriculum materials, field trips.
