Inservice Training Project in Teaching Black Studies

Inservice faculty training to develop knowledge and training techniques in field of black literature. Project in two parts: 1) Bi-monthly seminars for analysis and discussion of works taught and related works in literature, as well as sociological and historical framework for each work. Much of historical and sociological information unavailable in standard published works and gathering of this data will necessitate original research and challenging intellectual activity for teaching staff during project. 2) Four two-day conferences including a general discussion by outside specialists, small discussion groups of faculty and students. Members of English faculties from area college to be invited, local high schools will be invited to send representatives. Seminars and conferences will involve illustrated lectures, and simulated and real classrom demonstrations of the teaching of specific works. Growing demand for Black Studies, particularly at predominantly Negro Fisk Univeristy. Program will give faculty opportunity for concentrated exploration, discussion and experimentation in black literature and creative writing with knowledge and guidance consultants can provide. Funds for consultants' honoraria, travel, per diem; salaries for Director, discussion leaders, secretarial costs.
