Two ten-week seminars (one on Afro-American history, one on Afro-American literature) for ten faculty members at Mary Holmes Jr. College to prepare these faculty members to teach black studies. ABSTRACT: Mary Holmes Jr. College, serving the culturally isolated rural black youth of Mississippi, is responding to the need of black students for identification with their African-American heritage and with the creative contributions of their contemporaries. To fill this need, the college wishes to educate its rapidly expanding faculty in black studies, through a two part project: Part I, a ten-week seminar Afro-American history, with ten faculty members participating; Part II, a second ten-week seminar in Afro-American literature, with the same faculty members. Faculty will be able to transfer their newly acquired knowledge and perceptions directly and immediately into their day-to-day contacts with students. Funds for faculty stipends, visiting resource persons, travel and per diem, books and periodicals.
