To do a social and intellectual study of the lesser known but influential Southern "Black vanguard" who held the reins of leadership from time of Booker T. Washington's death in 1915 to the rise of Martin Luther King in 1955. The study will identify these leaders, examine how they functioned in the context of the South and nation, examine their racial ideologies and critically evaluate their influence.
