To support a seminar which will provide participants with a "systematic way of reflecting on some important medical phenomena and problems in present-day American society" with particular reference to selected social and cultural factors which influence them. The principle topics to be discussed are social and cultural conceptions of health and illness, the profession of medicine and the process of professional socialization, the hospital as a social system, national health care systems, modern medical research, and ethical and existential issues in contemporary medicine.
