To analyze the ideals of the Revolutionaries of 1776 and then examine the development and institutionalization of those ideals through a study of the clash of ideas and values in four historical crises (adoption of the Constitution, the Civil War, the New Deal and the Great Depression, and the social and political upheavals of the I960 and 1970's) .
