To investigate the ambivalent yet creatively fruitful attitudes toward the art of the past that modern artists have revealed from Courbet's time to our own involving examples within each artist's work of copying or inventing variations on older works, of borrowing motifs or absorbing influences from older styles, both in Europe and elsewhere as well as statements by the artists and their literary friends about their work.
