During the period 1660-1787 the governments of England and France did little officially to provide instruction for the subjects of their state or even to support private educational institutions. This study would focus on the general nature of education in England and France. Primary concern would be the realities of the situation (who learned what, and where), as opposed to the theories of education proposed during the period.
