To study selected aspects of the work of George Cruikshank (1792-1878) against the broad background of 19th century art. Study will lead to completion of a full-length, critical biography of Cruikshank. Cruikshank was working on his autobiography at the time of his death, Recollections. This manuscript was entrusted to a friend, Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson, who agreed to see the work into print and to add his own Memoir of the artist. These manuscripts were never published--and this study will see their publication.
