Study will be concerned with the legitimation of authority and changing economic practices in 18th century England (and France, possibly). A comparison will be made between the transformations of political power in England and France during the 18th century. The transition from the 16th century view of money-as-commodity to the later view of money-as-sign takes place largely during the 18th century. This study will trace this transition and correlate it with changing attitudes toward the legitimation of authority.
