To read widely and deeply in intellectual history. The field of study may generally be defined as that boundary where history, philosophy, and literary criticism meet. Books to be read will be those by cultural historians, historians of philosophy, literary historians, philosophers with an historical bent, and in general those writers with the power to synthesize. Range would be from ancient to modern.
