This project will: (1) refine the available methods of discourse analysis and at the same time develop new methods; (2) employ these refined and new methods of analysis on a variety of both relatively simple and complex essays; and, (3) after appropriate conclusions have been experientially and formally drawn from the first two steps, a General Theory of Discourse Analysis and of the Composing Process will be written.
