Study will deal with the interdependence and independence of two systems of meaning—the verbal and the graphic in Stendhal's self-illustrated autobiography, La Vie de Henry Brulard. It will begin with an examination of romantic aesthetics in order to Select convincingly certain features of the graphics as bases for analysis. The second part will contain a discussion of methodology which will be based on the premises posited by semiotic criticism. The study will be unique because no one has yet attempted to explore the interaction between visual and verbal signs in literature.
