To do a comprehensive study of Azorean Americans: An Immigrant Subculture in California. Particular interest will be paid to the diffusion of Azoreans and their cultural practices in California; their distribution pattern in California today and how it has changed through time; factors that have contributed to the retention and transmission of basic cultural practices such as the speaking of Portuguese, membership in fraternal organizations; basic family patterns, and participation in their religious festivals; the impact that these people have made on the California landscape; and the modifying influence that the culturally diverse state of California has had on the Azorean cultural practices through time.
