The Relationship of Literature and Painting

FAIN: FR-10382-78

Marian S. Robinson
San Jose State University (San Jose, CA 95192-0001)

This study, based upon the questions of the relationship of literature and painting and of the social and political forces upon those arts, would focus upon two related points: how the artist views himself and his art; and why novelists in England and France concerned themselves with the bleaker side of the Industrial Revolution before painters took up these topics. The literary part of the project would focus on Dickens and Flaubert, with additional use of Blake and George Eliot in England, Balzac and Zola in France; Courbet and Brown, Degas and Manet are particularly interesting as painters of the same period.
