To study in depth the illustrative and theoretical literature on autobiography. Questions to be studied include: the purposes, processes, value, recurring patterns and the kinds of balance between the external and internal life revealed in various autobiographies. Particular interest will be in the autobiographies of historians and intellectual reformers and the process whereby the autobiography of a biographer intersects with the life of the person he studies (Erikson on Gandhi, Duberman on Black Mountain personalities, etc.).
