The Road to Hitler: Culture and Society in Germany 1900-1945

FAIN: FS-10056-75

Tufts University (Somerville, MA 02144-2401)
Sol Gittleman (Project Director: January 1975 to present)

The seminar will focus on the social and cultural phenomena of pre-Hitler Germany — Expressionist art, literature, film and society, the impact of Nietzsche, Freud, Wagner, and Marx, Aryan supremacy, the search for a alternative to communism — in an attempt to explain the dynamics of what led Germany to embrace Nazism. Also to be considered is the impact of Hitler's dictatorship on art, literature, film and social institutions in The Third Reich.
