Music in the United States Before the Civil War

The seminar will focus on the aspects of American music and musical life from 1776 until the Civil War. Music for the stage, vocal and keyboard music, native church music, music education, concert life and other topics will be explored. Composers such as Benjamin Carr and A. P. Heinrich ("the Beethoven of Kentucky") will also be studied.
