To focus on the persistent identities which link modern dramatic forms and ideas to ancient prototypes by examining the alternative rejection and rediscovery of the classical conventions in European and American drama, the usefulness of ’’plot", "character", and other classical concepts whose standing has been in doubt, and the failure of neo-classical tragedy in England, compared with its successes in France and Germany.
