To test the hypothesis that classical Spanish comedy can best be understood as an escape from the strict morality which dominated the lives of the middle and upper classes of the time, this morality consisting of an improbable combination of Christian ethics, a bloody code of honor, and racist anti-Jewish and anti-Moslem beliefs.
