German Poetry and Poetics of the 20th Century

To study and clarify the vast cultural relationships in which modern German poetry enters. The seminar will involve diagramming of cultural and literary movements and anthologies. Key writers, Benn, Trakl, Celan, will be studied, both as makers of poetic artifacts and as centers of consciousness through which the tensions of the century are transmitted.
