Intensive textual study of three modern novels that embody the comparative spirit: Madame Bovary, Ulysses and The Magic Mountain. Subjecting these works to a wide variety of critical approaches in seminar papers and discussions, it is hoped that participants will develop an active respect for the diversity of approaches to literature as well as a mastery of the novels themselves.
