The Puritan Imagination in English and American Literature, 1592-1776

To study the impact of the Puritan imagination from the beginnings of the American nation. The seminar will be comparative in method, with primary texts, leaders, and historical participants drawn from the English Puritan movement as well as the American. The seminar will exhibit the diversity and development of Puritanism from the 1590's in England to the eve of the American Revolution examining significant Puritan concepts.
