To study and develop an understanding of the symbolic forms of architecture. Without such an understanding we cannot accurately judge the architecture of Periclean Athens, Imperial Rome, Renaissance Italy, 18th century Europe and America, Fascist Italy or Nazi Germany. Providing more than shelter, architecture reflects in its form the function it fulfills and the status of its owner, be he an individual or an institution.
