Medieval Allegory: From Biblical Typology to Dante's Divine Comedy

Seminar will examine the tradition of Christian allegory in its relationship to narrative literature from Augustine's Confessions to Dante's Divine Comedy. Topics for discussion will include the conflict of poetry and belief, medieval realism, four-fold interpretation, and the influence of Christian allegory on the subsequent history of autobiography.
