To examine the possibilities of presenting English literature, or any literature, by viewing it in the context of the sister-arts. Two sharp transitions in the history of English taste, one in the early 17th century bringing the "mannerist" and "baroque" concepts, and one in the late 19th, with the accompanying Impressionism and Pre- Raphaelite movement, will be the centers of particular interest. The aim will be to present the literature of the periods more comprehensibly and interestingly by associating it with the fine arts and musical arts of the day.
