Underlying Constants in the Changing Methods of Literary Study

To examine the underlying constants in the changing methods of literary study, posed first in connection with fundamental documents written early in the Western tradition by Plato, Aristotle, Horace, and Longinus. The seminar will examine how these principals have been refined and elaborated in the vocabulary and techniques of contemporary literary study.
