The relationship of folk and popular music to the art-music tradition of a given country will be a primary concern of the seminar. Special attention will be given to Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. Discussions will focus on the Indian-Hispanic and Afro-Latin American oral musical traditions of selected communities, the Iberian heritage of colonial music and what constitutes Latin American Musical character.
