Modern East European and Russian Literature

The seminar will study primarily twentieth century novels and short stories, but some plays (especially drama of the absurd in Poland and Czechoslovakia) and poems will also be read. The literary art of the works will be discussed, as well as the relationship of literature to political and historical backgrounds. The seminar is designed for teachers of English and world literature, Russian, and European history.
