The Role of Schools in the Development of Sociology and Other Social Sciences

FAIN: FS-10768-78

Edward A. Tiryakian
Duke University (Durham, NC 27705-4677)

A sociological approach to the development of sociology and other social sciences. The basic theme is that major advances in these disciplines often result from the formation and diffusion of "schools" organized around a central figure, an intellectual charismatic leader. The school is taken to be an actual intellectual community, with social ties among its members. Seminar will seek to formulate a general paradigm of development by examining three sociological schools: those organized around Durkheim (pre-WW I), Park (interwar years), and Parson (post-WW II).
