A seminar in three parts: 1) A worldwide review of the study of slavery from the end of the 18th century to the present. 2) An assessment of the general and theoretical views of historians and other social scientists regarding the origins and dynamics of slavery and slave society in different kinds of social systems. 3) In-depth case studies of representative slave systems, ancient, medieval and modern times.
