Art in Switzerland--Swiss Art

FAIN: FS-10788-78

Horst W. Janson

To trace the emergency of Swiss art as a distinct expression of national identity from the 16th century to the present. Switzerland's sense of nationhood derives from a shared democratic tradition, rather than from a common ethnic or linguistic heritage, a state of affairs in many ways comparable to that of the U.S. Swiss art reflects this diversity. Its evolution offers many illuminating parallels to that of American art.
