The Pre-Colonial States of Africa

Discussions will be devoted to origins of pre-colonial African states, their ideologies, administrative systems, and foreign affairs. Discussions also on religion, economy, social stratification and slavery, and everyday life in the pre-colonial cities and towns of African monarchies. Seminar will then turn to the impact of colonialism and the present role of these early states on contemporary African affairs. Seminar open to teachers of anthropology, black studies, sociology, political science, and history.
