Mary Fuller (Project Director: March 2010 to April 2012)

A four-week seminar for sixteen college and university teachers on English travel narratives about the Americas from 1550 to 1610.

This proposed summer seminar for college and university teachers will examine the textual and material records of early English contacts with North America. Events and texts studied will range from the first English voyages recorded in print (ca. 1555) through the first decade of North American settlement. The aim of the seminar will be to combine literary and textual approaches to the materials with the methods and resources of colonial history, archaeology, and the history of science. Three guest speakers will contribute disciplinary and case-specific expertise.
