An Educational History of the New Harmony Community

Study of the educational theories and practices used in Robert Owen's short-lived (1825-28) community of New Harmony, Indiana--1) an analysis of the educational philosophies of Owen, Johann Pestalozzi, and Emmanuel Fellenberg, whose methods found their way from Europe to the the New Harmony schools; 2) examination of the curricula, organization, governance, the methodology of the schools in the New Harmony system; and 3) the significance of the educational experiments at New Harmony for later educational movements. The participants in the New Harmony experiment sought to formulate an interdisciplinary theory of education which integrated both humanistic and techical aspects of learning. Offers important insights for modern education reformers.
