Study of the work that has been done in the field of Negro dialects, to learn methods used by investigators of Negro dialects in other cities. Fellow to apply these methods to a large body of student essays which he is collecting, to indicate both general charactersitics of the St. Louis dialect. In fall, 1970, fellow plans to use materials gathered during summer to prepare a text for remedial composition classes which will help the Negro understand his dialect and help him to move effectively from his spoken dialect to written form of standard English. An essential part of the process is to show the standard written dialect without denigrating the student's own dialect.
