Study of the impact of the struggle for human rights on the formation and implementation of American foreign policy since 1945, focusing on the increasing contributions of minority group representatives, especially black Americans; growing articulation from within the Negro community of a strong position regarding foreign policy; and the accelerating demand for justice within and without the U.S. which has raised questions about national goals in international affairs. Fellow sees need for Americans to understand the biases which interfere with our understanding of other people's points of views. Fellow's previous book, The Heathen Chinee: the American Image of China 1890-1905 (Ohio State University Press, 1970) dealt with the conflict between American desire for Asian markets and anti-Chinese feeling in the U.S.
