Two-part study: 1) completion of article on the Danish poet and dramatist Johannes Eward (1743-1781), emphasizing his handling of myth and 2) study of role of German idealism in Swedish literary criticism in the early 19th century. Literary theorist in German--and then in Sweden--began to demand a return to the national past a a means of reinvigorating a culture which they felt had been sapped by the literary conventions of the 18th century. Part of a book-length study which fellow plans on the myth of a Nordic "Golden Age" as it appears in English, German and Scandinavian literature.
