Study of music of Charles Ives: 1) inquiry into methods of music analysis to explain composer's music from a scientific point of view; and 2) analysis of literary (in particular, transcendental) influences in the composer's work. Ives is generally recognized as the first major American composers. In the course of fellow's graduate work on Ives, he edited and give the first comple performance of one of Ives' more visionary piano works, the Varied Air and Variations.
