To acertain how far racial and anthropological stereotypes were modified by the rapid development of systematic research in the social sciences; how African policy reflected the change in attitudes of an influential minory. To develop an intellectual history of the British colonial system in Africa, a system which has so far been treated prmarily in economic and administrative terms.
