To research musical life in London from the 1770s to the 1840s, the period of transformation of English musical culture from an amateur art to a heavy industry. Pre-Victorian England's attitude of favoring foreign composers over classical ones is similar to that of the 20th century United States, and an examination of this sort whould yield valuable information applicable to the problems of the modern American composer.
