To examine American culture between 1776-1815 from a moralistic point of view. The thesis of this study is that prominant individuals felt compelled to circumscribe their professional and cultural activities in accordance with a common set of moral imperatives. The study will be a series of essays focusing on Charles Willson Peale, William Dunlap, Meriwether Lewis and others.
