To study original materials in the James Bryce collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford Unversity, in order to prepare a critical edition of the 1870 Journal of Viscount Bryce's American travels, as well as relevant correspondence. Despite his eminence as a scholar, lecturer, and political figure, the work of James Bryce has been surprisingly neglected by both British and American scholars--to the extent that many of his papers, including the 1870 Journal, have been neither catalogued nor published.
