To carry out an ethnohistoric study of the community of Taos, New Mexico during the period 1776 to 1900. Taos has figured prominently in the history of the development of the U.S.--it was central to many of the events that surrounded the American occupation of New Mexico in 1847 and today Taos respresents in microcosm the interethnic relations between the Anglo American, Spanish American and Pueblo Indians of New Mexico.
