To examine the attitude toward America of two distinct generations of German-Jewish writers, the very first (Heine, Boerne, Lessman, Beer) which had only recently exited from the Ghetto and was aspiring to emancipation; the very last (Feuchtwanger, Doeblin, Werfel, Bruno Frank) which was the victim of Nazism, forced into exile, many to the U.S.
