Ezra Stiles Ely (1786-1861) the interaction between his religious belief and theological controversies and his manifold social, political, philanthropic, and financial activities in the securlar world. As pastor, missionary to the prostitutes of New York, Sabbatarian, State Clerk and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian denomination, a founder of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and Marion College in Missouri, member of Andrew Jackson's Kitchen Cabinet, proponent of African colonization and Negro education, Ely was much a man of the world. He was representative of much of his time and many elements in American though that last into and mould our own times.
